JEE Main Exam Pattern (Paper 1: B.E./B.Tech)

The paper is a 3-hour computer-based test of 75 questions across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, for a total of 300 marks.

Structure

SubjectSection A (MCQ)Section B (Numerical)Marks
Physics20 questions5 questions (all compulsory)100
Chemistry20 questions5 questions (all compulsory)100
Mathematics20 questions5 questions (all compulsory)100
Total6015300

Until 2024, Section B offered 10 questions with any 5 to attempt; from 2025 it has exactly 5 compulsory questions per subject.

Marking scheme

  • +4 marks for every correct answer — MCQ and numerical alike.
  • −1 mark for every wrong answer (yes, numericals too).
  • 0 for unattempted questions.
  • If NTA drops a question, everyone who saw that paper receives +4 for it; if multiple options are accepted, any of them earns +4.

Question types

  • MCQs (Section A): four options, exactly one correct. Includes Assertion–Reason, Statement I/II, and Match-the-List formats.
  • Numerical value questions (Section B): type the answer (integer or decimal) — no options. Rounding rules are stated in the question when relevant.

The CBT interface

Each question shows one at a time with a question palette on the right tracking five states: not visited, not answered, answered, marked for review, and answered & marked. You can jump to any question at any time within the 3-hour window. Buttons: Save & Next, Mark for Review & Next, Clear Response, and a final Submit with a summary.

Our mock tests replicate this interface exactly — palette colors, marking scheme and server-side timer — using real previous year papers, so the actual exam feels familiar on day one.
